TILICHO LAKE TREK – 12 DAYS

DAY 1 Arrival in Kathmandu (1,400m/4,592ft) – Transfer to Hotel and Trek Preparation

Enjoy the scenic view of the snowcapped mountain range as you approach Kathmandu. A representative from Outdoor expeditions Tours and Travels will welcome you at the Tribhuvan International Airport. Further, check into your hotel and relax for a while. Spend the evening immersed in the spiritual vibe of the Boudhanath, which is one of the holiest Buddhist pilgrimage sites in Nepal. You will see Buddhist devotees circumambulating the stupa and will also see monks chanting prayers. The stupa is also listed among the UNESCO World Heritage sites of Nepal. Later you will return to your hotel for the night. Overnight in Kathmandu.

DAY 2 Drive to Chame (2,670m/8,759ft) – 9 to 10 hours’ drive Chame Manang

The day starts early, and you will be taking an early morning drive to the Gurung village of Chame via Besisahar. You will be driving along the meandering hilly road of Nepal with a stunning view of snowcapped mountains, verdant hills, terraced farmlands. Enjoy a drive alongside fast- flowing rivers like Trishuli and Marshyangdi. You will be driving past the charming town of Besisahar, followed by a scenic drive to Chame. The small town of Chame is of great importance for trekkers as it is filled with a variety of shops like gear shops, medicine shops, and cold stores. Overnight in Chame.

DAY 3 Trek to Upper Pisang (3,300m/10,826ft) – 5 to 6 hours trek

Enjoy a wonderful trek to Upper Pisang, which takes you inside the Marshyangdi Valley. Hike through the forested trail filled with pipe trees and trek alongside Marshyangdi River. You get a savor the soaring mountains, including Annapurna II and Annapurna III. Explore the village of Upper Pisang features ancient traditional houses and an old monastery. People of Tibetan roots dominate the region, and you will find Tibetan customs and lifestyles here. Overnight in Upper Pisang.

DAY 4 Trek to Manang Village (3,540m/11,613ft) – 5 to 6 hours trek.

Take a scenic hike to Manang Village, which passes through one of the most scenic landscapes of the trek. The ascending trail will reward you with splendid views of the Annapurna Massif and neighboring peaks, along with the stunning view of the Marshyangdi River valley. Moreover, you will get to see an interesting landscape where some section is party and like Tibetan plateau while some section has pinewood forest. Enroute, you will see the quaint settlements of Ghyaru and Nawal. Upon climbing an ascend, you will see the astounding view of peaks, including Annapurna III and Tilicho Peak. You will be trekking past the old settlement of Barga with one of the oldest Buddhist monasteries of Nepal before reaching Manang. DAY 5 Explore Manang Village and Gangapurna Lake (3,540m/11,641ft)

Gangapurna Lake Spend a day acclimatizing in the beautiful village of Manang, which lies in the lap of Annapurna III and offers you a gorgeous view of Annapurna and Gangapurna. Enjoy an acclimatization hike to the beautiful Gangapurna Lake, which overlooks the panoramic view of the Himalayas and the Marshyangdi River Valley. Savor the view of the mountains, including Annapurna range, Gangapurna, and Tilicho peak, from the vantage point. Also, explore the old village of Tenki, which has a rustic feel, and walk in the narrow alleys of the village. Pay a visit to the ancient monasteries before returning to Manang village. If you want to add some adventure to your trek, then go on an acclimatization hike to Ice Lake, which is called Kicho Tal locally, It is a day hike and will take you around 6 to 7 hours. DAY 6 Trek to Siri Kharka (4,000m/13,122ft) – 4 to 5 hours trek

You will be walking on an ascending trail and crossing a suspension bridge over the Manang River. Take a scenic walk on the trail filled with pine trees. Also, the magnificent view of the Tilicho Peak will entertain you on your way to the Khangsar village, which has a very traditional Tibetan vibe. Continue your trek on an ascending trail to Shree Kharka. Savor the breathtaking views of mountains like Gungang Himal, Chulu, Gungang Himal along the way. Overnight in Siri Kharka.

DAY 7 Trek to Tilicho Base Camp (4,150m/13,614ft) – 3 to 4 hours trek

Today you will be trekking to Tilicho Base Camp, and the trail features only a few gentle ascents. The trail to the base camp passes through the landslide area, so you need to be cautious as you walk on the loose rocks and pebbles. En route, you will see the impressive rock formations. Tilicho Base Camp overlooks the breathtaking view of Tilicho Peak and other neighboring mountains. Overnight in Tilicho Base Camp.

DAY 8 Hike to Tilicho Lake (4,920m/16,141ft) and trek back to Siri Kharka (4,000m/13,122ft) – 4 to 5 hours

Tilicho Lake – It is a highest lake in the world situated at an altitude of 4920mStart your hike early to avoid the afternoon wind. Walk slowly but steadily on an ascending trail all the way up to Tilicho Lake. The pristine water of the Tilicho Lake circle by white snow and ice will entice you. The turquoise colored Tilicho Lake is situated at the foot of the Tilicho Peak at an altitude of 4,920 meters or 16,141ft. You will reach the highest point of the trek at Tilicho Lake. Soak into the natural beauty of Tilicho Lake and click a lot of pictures before returning to Sir Kharka. Be equally cautiously when returning as you will be walking on a descending trail while maintaining your pace. Overnight in Siri Kharka.

DAY 9 Trek to Manang Village (3,540m/11,613ft) – 4 to 5 hours

Trek alongside a river and hike pass monastery on your trek from Siri Kharka to Manang village. On the way, you will be briefly stopping at Khangsar for lunch. Khangsar is one of the oldest villages in the region and has a rustic charm. Tahrap Monastery of Khangsar is one of the oldest monasteries of the region and is credited for starting a monastic settlement. You will be crossing a suspension bridge and waling on a descending trail on your way to Manang village. Overnight in Manang village.

DAY 10 Drive to Besisahar – 6 to 7 hours drive

Today you will be leaving Manang village for Besisahar and driving past the wonderful landscape featuring a tumbling waterfall, snowy mountains, brown hills, and pine trees. Moreover, enjoy a drive past traditional settlements which was along the ancient Tibet trade route. The small town of Besisahar caters to the needs of trekkers, and there are many hotels as well. Overnight in Besisahar. 

DAY 11 Drive to Kathmandu – 5 to 6 hours drive

Enjoy a scenic drive through the winding road along the Prithivi Highway. You will be driving beside the fast-flowing rivers of Nepal Trishuli and Marshyangdi and will also drive past the confluence of the two rivers. Moreover, you will see the amazing views of verdant hills and local farmlands on your way to Kathmandu. Check into your hotel and spend some time relaxing, or you can explore the beautiful city. DAY 12 Final Departure

Today will be the last day of your Tilicho Lake Trek, and you will be bidding farewell to Nepal. Best Time to Travel

The best time to go to the Tilicho Lake Trek is spring (March to May) and autumn (mid-September to November)

Spring is the season that attracts travelers, including nature lovers. It is the time of the year when rhododendron blooms in different colors like white, pink, red, yellow and others, and you will see wildflowers too. The temperature is cool, neither too hot nor too cold, and the sky is clear, so you can enjoy the astounding mountain views. There lie the chances of light showers, so it is better to carry a raincoat.Autumn is also the popular month to trek to Tilicho Lake. The western is pleasant, and you will see the azure sky with an unobstructed view of mountains. The daytime is warm with a cool night. Since it is the popular month to trek among trekkers, the crowd will be difficult to avoid. The season attracts travelers from all around the world, so it is a good opportunity to meet and interact with people from different walks of life.You need to be prepared with proper winter gear for a winter trek. Sunshine makes the daytime warm while the nights are cold. Moreover, you will see a clear mountain view in winter as well. Monsoon is the least favorite month for trekking. Is this suitable for you?

  • Ghorepani Poon Hill Trek is an easy trek that takes you close to the Himalayan mountains within a short timeframe. Ideal for beginners and families traveling with kids (6 years and above. If the kids feel tired en route, the porters can carry them.)
  • You need to be reasonably fit. If you hike regularly or can climb stairs without any difficulty, you can easily do this trek.
  • There is no risk of altitude sickness as the trail does not go beyond 3,000 meters. The highest point you will reach is the viewpoint of Poon Hill (3,210m), where you will be spending only an hour or two.
  • The trip lasts for seven days. The first day’s trek is the toughest as you have to ascend a lot of stone staircases. If you have problems with your knee or ankles, you should opt for an easier trip. The maximum you spend 6 hours walking on the trail and a minimum of 3 hours. On average, you will be walking around 4 hours each day.
  • On the trail, you will have your meals and stay overnight at local teahouses or mountain lodges. These establishments have basic facilities and appear rustic compared to city hotels.

DAY 1 Arrival in Kathmandu (1,400m/4,592ft) – Transfer to Hotel and Trek Preparation

Endless rows of green hills and mountains greet you as your plane hovers above Kathmandu. After landing our representative will meet you and drop you at your hotel. Take a rest and get refreshed. Attend a pre-trek briefing later in the afternoon and meet your trek leader. Check your gear for the final time and ask questions if you have any. If you feel like it, stroll around the colorful lanes of Thamel, a tourist hotspot. Do schedule your arrival in the city early in the morning or during the daytime, and it will give you enough time to attend the pre-trek briefing and recover from jet lag. Overnight in Kathmandu.

DAY 2 Fly to Pokhara (800m/2,624ft), drive to Hile and trek to Ulleri 91,970m/6,462ft) – 25 minutes flight, 2:30 hours drive and 3 to 4 hours (4km) trek

Today you have a long day ahead. Wake up early and prepare to leave Kathmandu. You will be driven to the domestic airport to catch your flight to Pokhara, a picturesque lakeside city. It is a scenic half-hour flight filled with majestic views of Langtang Range and Annapurna mountains. From Pokhara, you board a vehicle and drive to Hile, from where your trek begins. It is a refreshing walk across a typical Nepalese landscape. The trail winds through the verdant forests of Annapurna Conservation Area and charming Gurung and Magar villages. From Tikhedhunga, a series of steps carved on the side of a large hill leads you to your destination for today, Ulleri – a Gurung village. Today is one of the toughest days of the trek.’Bistarai, bistarai! or slowly, slowly is how you tackle the stairs. Once you arrive in Ulleri, head to a teahouse and give your limbs a much- needed rest. Overnight in Ulleri.

DAY 3 Trek to Ghorepani (2,874m/9,427ft)- 4 to 5 hours (9km) trek

From Ulleri, continue walking on the stone steps all the way to Ghorepani. This portion of the trail is probably the most scenic during spring as the trail is filled with rhododendron blooms. Pause at intervals to stop for a breather and soak in the awe-inspiring views of Machhapuchhre (Fishtail Peak) and Annapurna South. Get your permits checked at the entrance of Ghorepani. The literal translation of Ghorepani is horse water. This village was named once the watering hole for horses and mule packs traveling along the old trade route. The village has a large Magar population and an assortment of lodges and teahouses. Poon Hill lies right above Ghorepani. If you are not too tired, you can take a quick hike to Poon Hill to enjoy a sunset view. Overnight in Ghorepani.

DAY 4 Hike to Poon Hill (3,210m/10,529ft) and trek to Tadapani (2,600m/8,528ft) – 5 to 6 hours (9.5km) trek

Wake up before dawn and hike to Poon Hill to experience the spectacular Poon Hill sunrise. Once you reach the top, you are surrounded on all sides by Himalayan mountains. Enjoy the 360-degree view and watch the spectacular display of light and color as the first rays of the sunlight up the icy blue peaks. The snow – covered Annapurna Massif, Dhaulagiri, Gangapurna, Machhapuchhre, and Hiunchuli turn from red, pink and orange to a huge chunk of golden yellow, Click as many pictures as you can. Poon Hill’s elevation is 3, 210m, the highest point of your trek. Later head down to Ghorepani and descend to Tadapani via Banthanti village. En route hike past Deurali Danda, another lookout point offering inspiring views of the Annapurna’s. Colorful players flags greet you as you arrive in Tadapani, a village lying at the foot of Machhapuchhre. Locals revere this mountain, and climbing it is forbidden. Make your way to a teahouse and take a much-needed rest. Overnight in Tadapani.

DAY 5 Trek to Kimchi via Ghandruk and drive to Pokhara (800m/2,624ft) – 4 to 5 hours (10km) trek and 2:30 hours’ drive.

From Tadapani, walk for around 3 hours and reach Ghandruk, a traditional Gurung heritage village. This is the second-largest Gurung village in Nepal and is home to a large number of British Gurkha soldiers. Stop for lunch and explore the village. If you are interested, you can visit the old Gurung Museum. Later enjoying fantastic views of Annapurna Himal, you descend to Kimchi and board a vehicle to Pokhara. After driving for about two and a half hours, you reach the lakeside city. Head to your hotel and get refreshed. Overnight in Pokhara

DAY 6 Fly to Kathmandu (1,400m/4,592ft) – 25 minutes flight

If you wish to explore the tourist attractions of Pokhara before returning to Kathmandu, do let us know. We will arrange a half-day guided sightseeing tour for you (at additional cost). The flight to Kathmandu is filled with more splendid Himalayan views. On reaching Kathmandu, check into your hotel and spend the day at leisure. Relax at your hotel or explore more of the city on your own. You can walk down the local bazaar of Ason or Thamel to shop for souvenirs. Celebrate the completion of your Nepal trip with a complimentary farewell dinner with your guide or one of our team members. Overnight in Kathmandu.

DAY 7 Final Departure

Our representative will drop you at the airport three hours before your flight departs. Best Time to Travel

Spring (March to May) and autumn (mid-September to November) are considered the best seasons for a trek to Ghorepani Poon Hill. The weather stays dry and clear during these times, making it ideal for trekking and enjoying unobstructed views of mountains. The days are warm, and the nights chilly. On the downside, however, these are peak seasons, and the trails get crowded and busy. During spring, the rhododendron forests covering the trail burst into colorful pink, white and red blooms. Walking through the hills covered with rhododendron blooms against the backdrop of the snowy Himalayas will seem like a walk-through paradise. Autumn is the most popular season for Ghorepani Poon Hill Trek. With the end of the wet monsoon season, which clears the skies of dust and impurities, you can enjoy crystal clear views during this season. Timing your trek around last September or October will allow you to experience the most important festivals of the Nepalese Dashain and Tihar. These festivals celebrated by Hindus last for several days. Expect good food, merry- making, dance, and music at all the villages along the trail. You can also opt for a monsoon or winter trek if you want to avoid the crowds. You can enjoy some off-season discounts at teahouse which remain mostly empty during these times. But you should be ready to face some discomforts (rain, snow, and extreme cold) if you take to the trail at these times.
